When it feels like the world is spinning into a blur and everything is out of your control, it’s the best time to pour your passion into a cause you believe in. Supporting the hardworking individuals and organizations making a difference is a year-round endeavor, and it’s this time of year especially that we are most reminded of those efforts. This Giving Tuesday, for the literary-inclined, consider supporting these Colorado reading and writing organizations.

The Word is a Colorado-based nonprofit founded in 2016 to promote authentic storytelling from BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, neurodiverse and disabled communities, recognizing that expanded narratives are necessary to achieve equity in economic access and societal systems. The Word’s program offerings include the Editor-Writer Mentorship, [margins.], Literary Conference + Book Festival, #MarginsBookselling, the 2023-24 Denver Big Read (NEA), Word Unbound literary workshop series and year-round Community Engagement workshops and gatherings.

“Our 2024 [margins.] Literary Conference and Book Festival in the Santa Fe Arts District was a great showcase of local and national writers,” programs director Chris Aguilar-Garcia shares. “As a small, literary nonprofit we rely on the support of the local community to make our programming possible.”

Books to Kids connects children of historically underserved communities with high-quality, diverse literature—and their creators. Founded in 2018, Books to Kids serves Title I schools in the Denver metro area, primarily through the Author Visit Program which helps schools host author visits and purchase books for students.

You can easily donate to Books to Kids via their website or become even more involved by signing up to volunteer. Keep track of all the literary fun by following them on Instagram.

More Ways to Give

There are many more ways to support Colorado reading and writing organizations, plus writers, readers and sustainable reading in the Denver area this Giving Tuesday. Consider making a donation or starting a fundraiser on behalf of First Book, an organization removing barriers to equitable education that reaches 6.5 million kids each year in low-income communities across North America, providing books and resources through a powerful network of more than 600,000 individual educators, professionals and volunteers specifically serving children in need.

Or perhaps you’ve made use of the charming Little Free Libraries throughout Denver neighborhoods. This non-profit’s mission is to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book-exchange boxes, aiming for little libraries in every neighborhood across the United States. Book lovers can share in the mission by donating here.

It can be easy to forget, that reading is a privilege, one that many miss out on because they never learned to read. Join the mission for a literate Colorado with the Literacy Coalition of Colorado, whose aim is to connect service providers with adult learners and resources. There are many ways to volunteer and donate to this important cause.

Join forces with Book Give whose volunteers collect, sort, box up and deliver books, and connect with community partners to assess needs throughout the metro area. “We believe that everyone who wants books should have as many as they want. BookGive makes sure every person throughout metro Denver has access to free books—books they can keep and own.” Donate (dollars or books!) or volunteer with Book Give this Giving Tuesday.
